Motivation

Help me I feel lazy

I haven’t written in a while and I wish I could say it’s because I’m out living life to the fullest, but we all know thats not true. I’ve been being a blob by indulging in netflix, tik tok, and social media way too much. I kept finding excuses not to write and it was easy to push off. I was so excited when I started my blog but, suddenly the initial giddiness that got me going was fading. Even though writing is something I’m very passionate about I found it difficult to bring myself to do it. Hate to sound cliche but I was missing that writers moment where you just feel inspired to write and zone out the rest of the world. Of course it’s unrealistic of me to believe that “aha!” moment will take place every time I write. So how does one stay motivated?

I’m sure everyone has moments where they don’t have the motivation to do something-it’s natural human behavior, but how do we overcome those? What helps me is looking at what the positive outcomes will be after I complete the task. I started a blog to improve my writing and if I don’t continue to put out blogs on a consistent basis then I’m not going to get better. It was truly disheartening when the lack of motivation began because I remember how fueled I was when I started. I don’t believe this lull in motivation is an indicator than I shouldn’t be doing it and that is something that’s so important to remember. Just because you have a lapse of motivation does not mean that you are not meant to do something.

I also struggle as many of us do, to stay motivated in the workplace. Coffee surely gives me a boost but without intrinsic motivation it’s not enough to keep me motivated long term. Companies have different ways to motivate there employees but an external stimulant isn’t the answer. Sure this extrinsic motivation will work temporarily but this type of motivation isn’t the solution. The driving force needs to come from within. Intrinsic motivation is the type of motivation needed. With the new year coming up its a good time to make some life updates. If you’re truly lacking motivation at work, ask yourself why and go from there.

I do want to note that a lack of motivation can also be a sign of mental health issues. If you feel this is the case for you please seek out help from a psychologist. A psychologist/mental health professional will be able to help you work through your mental health issues and provide feedback.

It’s quite impossible to be motivated all the time even towards something you love. In a culture of instant gratification and a world with so many distractions its often easier to indulge in those and leave our responsibilities for a later time. But I managed to do it. I finished a blog and have broken my dry spell. If I can do it, trust me so can you! Just as quick as motivation can fade, it can easily be ignited like a match again.
