New Year’s Resolutions

Let’s make our dreams come true in 2021

I always find it interesting how whenever the New Year approaches we all rush to think of resolutions. The end of the year makes us reflect on everything in our lives which is definitely a good thing, but it’s probably something we should be doing a lot more often anyway. It’s easy to get caught in the motions of life and not really think about what we want out of it and if we’re moving in the right direction. So when the New Year comes around we use it as a benchmark to finally make a change. “This will be the year I finally start my business” or “This year I’ll travel and see the world” are some common ones. These are certainly great goals but if we aren’t constantly checking in with them or making concrete plans they’re never going to happen. One of my goals for 2020 was to start a blog and I did that, but honestly I had much bigger plans for my blog strategy than I actually implemented. The problem was I didn’t make actionable, attainable, and measurable goals. I’ve been kind of winging it without any concrete plans which is something I’m definetly improving on this year.

When it comes to  setting big goals like starting a business or traveling it needs to be honed in on a bit more if it’s to be realized. Many years in the past I’ve made the goal to lose weight and not a single year did I actively achieve that goal. That’s because I never had a realistic plan. I’d run once a week but, then eat like I always have or worse and then get frustrated when I didn’t see progress and give up. My plan was set to fail from the start because it wasn’t thought out well at all.

It’s great to come up with resolutions but it’s just as important to figure out how we’re going to get them done. If you’re not sure how to set your goals appropriately this article can help you make sure you’re setting yourself up for success with goal setting best practices: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newHTE_90.htm

For those of us who like to write everything down I recommend a goal setting planner to help you stay on track all throughout the year but there’s probably an app for this:
