Comparing yourself to others

Your life path is different and unique than everyone else’s

Does it ever seem like everyone around you is making major moves in their lives? Friends are getting promoted, buying houses, going on once-in-a-lifetime backpacking trips, and getting married and you can’t help but feel like you’re behind? It’s hard not to compare yourself to your peers and it’s not necessarily a bad thing to do so. It can definitely be used as motivation to improve yourself and life. But it’s important to remember that your life journey is unique and different than everyone else’s and you aren’t failing at life just because you haven’t started a multi-million dollar business by age 25.

With my birthday approaching I found that I’ve been constantly comparing myself to my peers on social media and can’t help but feel like I haven’t accomplished enough. They do say you’re your own harshest critic. It’s so important to remember that you’re life journey is specific to you. Just because you haven’t gotten that big promotion yet doesn’t mean that you won’t and don’t have a successful career. Maybe your company just promotes at a slower rate or has different criteria for promotions. Just because you haven’t found your life partner doesn’t mean you’re destined for a loveless and lonely life. Maybe you just have a strong understanding of what you want from a partner and aren’t willing to settle for less.

You have to make your own personal and realistic goals and aim for those. You also need to appreciate your accomplishments thus far, if you’re constantly comparing yourself to others you’re setting yourself up to be pretty miserable all the time. This is definitely easier said than done especially in this age of social media. Everyone wants to flex how amazing his or her life is, but social media is just showing exactly that; the best aspects of someone’s life, it’s a skewed perspective.

Remember to be kind to yourself and focus on how far you’ve come and how much more accomplishments you have coming your way.
